Deanna Favre’s personal tragedies — the death of her younger brother and her battle with breast cancer — played out in the public arena.

“A week after my brother’s funeral, I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Favre said Thursday at a luncheon in downtown Green Bay. “Surely God was kidding.”

But the self-proclaimed better half of Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre credits her faith and prayer for helping her through many of the difficult patches of her life.

More than 545 women attended the luncheon to hear Favre speak — one of many events in the area scheduled to celebrate the 56th annual National Day of Prayer. About 320 people signed up for a morning breakfast, also sponsored by the Freedom House Ministries.

Today at 6:30 p.m., there’s a free concert and worship at Living Hope Church on Green Bay’s west side that’s open to the public.

“Like anything else, if you bring something to the forefront of everyone’s attention, it affects our community,” said Jill Kocian, state coordinator for the National Day of Prayer.

At the concert and worship session, prayers will be said for the five segments of society — family, churches, government, educators and the media, Kocian said.
